If you have been around here or following on Instagram for a while you might have seen the namer ALDER JAMES being thrown around. I figure now might be the right time to create an official announcement. This has been a dream in the making for around 12 years now. My husband and I pulled the trigger around 2018 and created a side hustle architecture firm. My husband, Matt has been working as an architect since 2011. Last year at the height of the pandemic we took the our biggest step yet and made ALDER JAMES our full time job.
It has been an incredible year for us professionally. While the world was going through some extreme challenges we were able to take the time to push ourselves to make this our big break. We started with a couple of small remodels and now have a healthy list of awesome projects.
I am sharing this here on my site as a way to further connect and share all that goes on behind the scenes at ALDER JAMES and how Emily Alder works in to that.

Founded in 2018 by husband and wife Matthew James Gummow and Emily Alder Rolfing, Alder James grew out of a desire to improve our communities through our own unique take on place-making. From the very beginning, we’ve been fortunate to partner with incredible clients on life-changing projects. As we grow, we continue to build vital relationships, improving our capacity for collaborative success.

Matthew Gummow, NCARB Partner and Principal Architect
Matthew has worked in the architecture industry for over a decade on a wide range of projects including custom homes, schools, civic and municipal buildings, cinemas, and hospitality/retail projects. Matthew believes strongly that architecture connected with the landscape elevates human experience. Licensed to practice Architecture in California, Nevada, and Arizona, he has developed a reputation for delivering projects that exceed expectations. Matthew has a strong grasp of the entire process through construction and prides being directly involved throughout the whole project.
Emily Alder Rolfing Partner and Designer
Emily, a Laguna Beach native with deep roots in the community, directs interior design and décor with inspired insight for materials, palettes, and furnishings along with her leadership in marketing and business operations. Above all else, Emily's love of authenticity and natural beauty provides the foundation for her design philosophy. Her attention to detail is rooted in a lifelong belief that true beauty is found in the small and humble places.
